Science Research Programme (SRP) and
Student Mentorship Programme (SMP)
The SRP/SMP provides juniour college/secondary school students with an opportunity to step beyond their textbooks and experience science as it is actually done, by undertaking research/project work supervised by University staff. Click here for the list of student research projects.
1. Generally, the research in the physics department may be classified as
(a) Theoretical: requiring the use of theoretical concepts and mathematical tools
(b) Experimental: involving work in a laboratory
(c) Computational: requiring the use of computer models and simulations.
2. As physics is the oldest of the sciences, it has several mature branches. Research in the more mature areas would generally require more background knowledge on behalf of the student compared to newer and emerging disciplines.
3. Students should formulate a research project that interests them in consultation with their teachers and supervisors, bearing in mind the realistic time constraints and point 2 above. The research areas of the department and its individual staff may be found here:
4. Students should note that research is inherently unpredictable, but if they are sufficiently passionate and dilligent the experience will certainly be enriching.
