Our Alumnus Speaks…

Department of Physics catches up with alumnus Asst Prof Chang Guoqing (PhD, 2018), currently leading his research group at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Share with us how your interest in physics started.
It started from a popular science book called “100000 Whys”. This book ignited my curiosity to natural science when I was in primary school. Reading good popular science books can play a crucial role in cultivating children’s interest in science at an early stage. Though I did not really understand the science behind at that time, it did open the door of natural science to me. Among all the natural sciences, physics, a science that deals with the fundamental workings of the universe, was the most attractive to me. I was impressed that the physical world can be explained or described by very simple equation or formula.

What was your experience like as a Master’s student in the department and how instrumental was it to your PhD study?
It was an important and indispensable experience that led to my present academic career. There were two parts in my two-year Master’s study in the Department of Physics: coursework and research projects. On the one hand, the courses I took laid a solid theoretical foundation for my research later. On the other hand, they helped me sort out the research direction of my interest, which is in the field of quantum systems. I was not quite clear whether I should work on theoretical or experimental physics at that time. My Master’s project gave me a valuable ‘trial’ opportunity in exploring my PhD direction. From this, I finally figured out that I am better at theoretical and computational physics and this would be my research direction in my PhD study.

Receiving the Best Graduate Researcher Award (2017) from Prof Lu Yixin (Head, Department of Chemistry)

My Master's project gave me a valuable ‘trial’ opportunity in exploring my PhD direction.

Share about your current undertaking at Nanyang Technological University.
Having joined NTU last year, presently I am building up my research group at NTU which comprises fellow team members, research fellows and PhD students. My group focuses on the theoretical and numerical study of quantum materials. With support from the Singapore National Research Foundation and NTU, we aim to realise the development of next-generation quantum technologies in the next five years, which can be applied to high-performance electronics at a low cost. Besides academic research, I also contribute to teaching, students mentoring, and other service-related activities of the school and university. There are many things to learn in my position, and it is a great pleasure to be a member of the NTU family.

What words of encouragement do you like to share with our students?
Enjoy your study at NUS. It will be a great experience in your life. For master’s students who plan to apply for a PhD programme, the top universities in Singapore are a good choice for you. For the present PhD students, I would encourage you to be actively involved in research from the first day of your study. For all graduate students, make full use of the resources of the university and consult your advisors whenever in doubt. This will surely benefit you in your future career. My best wishes to all of you.
