Styling of Biofluorescence in Fish Scales

Upcycling waste towards sustainable living – Fish scale waste is transformed into brightly coloured scales under UV illumination with controlled thermal treatment. The transformation process presents no significant changes to the optical and physical appearance of the scales, allowing them to be crafted into hidden messages that are only revealed under UV excitation.

I was surprised to find that the deeper I got into research, the more I got to re-use what I had learnt in school. I always found it astounding, yet exciting to see something I had done before reappear in my research, and being able to apply my skills and past experiences helped to make my research journey very engaging and self-fulfilling! Through the four years of my time here, I have learnt a great deal from my mentors and peers, and I am glad to have expanded my horizons in STEM through my research!
