MSc AI for Science

Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming scientific research and discovery. The Nobel Committee recognized AI’s transformative power and awarded the 2024 Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry to AI scientists. The MSc (AI for Science) is an interdisciplinary programme designed to equip the next generation of scientists, applied mathematicians, engineers with emerging AI tools and necessary scientific knowledge for AI-driven innovation and data-driven discovery. The curriculum encompasses machine learning and deep learning grounded in applications across various scientific fields. Students trained under this programme will be well-prepared to design and implement cutting-edge AI techniques in academic or industrial research and development.

Programme Objectives

  • Train students to be “bilingual” in AI and Science, hence ready to apply AI to real-world problems in scientific research and discovery.
  • Enable students to derive insights and formulate hypotheses from complex, noisy, or extensive data sets.
  • Expose students to ground-breaking applications of AI across diverse scientific fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacy, epidemiology, and more.
  • Teach students to communicate effectively and critically in the use of AI in scientific discovery.
  • Prepare graduates for a wide array of emerging AI-leaning professions such as researchers, scientists, R&D managers, project managers, amongst others, in both academic institutions and the private sector.
  • Equip graduates with the capability for data-driven research, hence upskilling them to pursue competitive PhD programmes at NUS and other prestigious universities worldwide.
  • Provide advanced knowledge to educators and other professionals who are interested in the use of AI in research, development, and discovery.
