Physics Engagement Day 2018
The Department of Physics welcomed over 50 prospective students and their parents during the Physics Engagement Day held on 29 April. Inaugurated last year, the Engagement Day event is an initiative by the Faculty of Science to engage prospective students who have received admission offers to consider pursuing a science degree at NUS. It is hoped that the students will be better positioned to make informed decisions on their choice of major after their orientation in the department.
Prof Lim Hock Conferred Emeritus Professorship
A ceremony to confer Prof Lim Hock from the Department of Physics as Emeritus Professor was held on 25 Jun. It is indeed an honour for the department that two of its faculty have been bestowed with this distinctive award with Prof Lim being the third. The award of Emeritus Professorship is conferred to full professors on retirement in recognition of their stellar and sustained contributions in distinguished scholarship and service to the university
An Interview with Prof K K Phua
Prof Phua Kok Khoo, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, World Scientific Publishing Company (WSPC); Adjunct Professor, Department of Physics at both National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University; Founding Director, Institute of Advanced Studies, Nanyang Technological University (modelled on IAS Princeton, USA), shares with Physics Matters about establishing WSPC and as well as physics.

Art and Science – A Rendezvous
Will truth prevail or the aesthetics reign? Art and Science—how does one draw the line? The general education module The Art of Science, the Science of Art seeks to demystify the boundary between a work of science and a work of art by examining the crossroads between the two.
Physics Enrichment Camp (5 – 8 June)
The Physics Enrichment Camp (PEC) 2018 attracted over 660 students from 32 secondary schools and 14 junior colleges. Jointly organised by the Department of Physics and the NUS Physics Society, and sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the camp was held over two days for each level—secondary and junior college—of students.
Summer Camps 2018
July was a significant month for the Department of Physics as it welcomed two groups of young visitors one after another. They were here to attend a summer camp organised by the department. All of the high school students were here for the first time.
