The Department of Physics welcomed over 50 prospective students and their parents during the Physics Engagement Day held on 29 April. Inaugurated last year, the Engagement Day event is an initiative by the Faculty of Science to engage prospective students who have received admission offers to consider pursuing a science degree at NUS. It is hoped that the students will be better positioned to make informed decisions on their choice of major after their orientation in the department.

Prof Sow Chorng Haur gave a brief introduction of the department to prospective students. He drew their attention on a few interesting research endeavours by faculty in the department. Prof Valerio Scarani delivered a talk on curriculum structure and career options of a physics education. He also engaged students by speaking on the subject of quantum physics and its impact.

The highlight of the day was a tour of the department. Visitors were brought to the Centre for Ion Beam Applications where they learnt about novel applications using proton beam from detecting fake gems to potential cancer treatment. At the Centre for Quantum Technologies, visitors were introduced to the basic research on quantum physics and the building of devices based on quantum phenomena. There was also a solar viewing at the department rooftop observatory and Dr Abel Yang was present to explain and answer questions from visitors. The day ended with staff and visitors interacting over a sumptuous lunch.
