Learning Physics at NUS: A Journey of Discovery
Learning physics is often seen as a daunting choice, laden with abstract theories and intense mathematical calculations. But let’s be honest—who didn’t get a little thrill from the mind-bending science in movies like “Interstellar”? That cinematic dive into wormholes and time dilation sparked my curiosity and made me realize that physics isn’t just about numbers on a blackboard; it’s about unraveling the mysteries of the universe and sometimes feeling like a sci-fi hero in the process. The awe-inspiring visuals of black holes and the gripping narrative of space-time exploration showcased how physics can bridge the gap between the fantastical and the real, turning complex concepts into compelling stories. This blend of imagination and intellect is what drew me to pursue a deeper understanding of the physical world.
During my year at the National University of Singapore (NUS), I have gained invaluable experiences and insights. The department offers a diverse array of classes, covering topics from the microscopic realm of nanotechnology to the vast expanses of the cosmos. These courses range from established theoretical subjects to cutting-edge experimental technologies. The curriculum is designed to encourage interdisciplinary learning, integrating classes like machine learning and data science and also hands-on experiences like fabricating nanowires using a hot plate. This practical approach ensures that students not only understand theoretical concepts but also apply them in innovative ways. The faculty members are exceptionally knowledgeable and supportive, always open to student feedback, and eager to foster a collaborative learning environment. Their passion for teaching and research is infectious, inspiring us to push the boundaries of our knowledge and capabilities.
I aim to leverage my physics expertise and strong background in mathematical modeling to explore and understand the intricate behaviors of these systems, ultimately contributing to advancements in energy storage systems.

NUS also provides excellent facilities to support both academic and personal development. The department frequently organizes lab visits and seminars, allowing students to engage with practical aspects of their studies. These visits have been eye-opening, offering firsthand experience with advanced equipment and experimental techniques that are crucial for cutting-edge research. The newly constructed Medicine+Science Library offers a serene environment for reading and study, equipped with a vast collection of scientific literature that makes learning both engaging and enjoyable. Moreover, the University Sports Center and sports field are perfect for maintaining physical fitness, which has been crucial for my mental well-being. Regular exercise has helped me manage the stress of academic life and maintain a healthy work-life balance. This balance of rigorous academic training and physical activity has kept me positive and motivated. Participating in sports and recreational activities has also provided opportunities to connect with fellow students, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

Currently, I am pursuing my PhD under the guidance of Professor Sow Chorng Haur. My research focuses on integrating nanoscience with battery technology to develop high-performance lithium-ion batteries. This involves studying the properties of nanomaterials and their applications in enhancing the efficiency and durability of energy storage systems. I aim to leverage my physics expertise and strong background in mathematical modeling to explore and understand the intricate behaviors of these systems, ultimately contributing to advancements in energy storage systems. By investigating the electrochemical processes at the nanoscale, I hope to uncover new mechanisms that can lead to the development of next-generation batteries with superior performance. This research not only has the potential to impact the energy sector but also addresses global challenges related to renewable energy and sustainability. The opportunity to work on such a transformative project under the mentorship of a renowned expert is truly inspiring and drives me to strive for excellence in my research endeavors.
