A Day in the Life of …

Scientific Manager Dr Lim Kim Yong shared about a day in his life at work. Dr Lim is also an alumnus from the department.

Share with us what’s a day like for you at work.
My job as a scientific manager offers much variety. On some days, I interact with visitors to the Science Demonstration Laboratory. These visitors could be school students or local or overseas visitors from other universities. We show them science demonstrations to help them find joy in understanding science and encourage them to try the demonstrations for themselves. An advertisement is in order: visit Science Demonstration Laboratory to find out more!

On some days, I guide high school, undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research work which can range from exploring daily phenomena to materials science. On others, I work on new display projects, demonstrations and writing. Of course, one can never avoid the administrative duties.

What gives you the greatest job satisfaction?
Making things work for people and seeing that they enjoy what we have to offer give me the greatest job satisfaction. We are happy if our visitors can see science and mathematics as something that they like themselves and could experience and appreciate the subjects with their friends and family. This is something good enough for me.

Is there any unforgettable experience you have had at work and the lesson you learn from it?
I think our experience will (probably) be forgotten by us when we breathe our last so (maybe), nothing is unforgettable. Or everything is. I just make sure I do my best and try to improve as a person day by day. There is (probably) no way that we can have everything.

Any thoughts about how to cope when faced with a challenging job situation?
Take our work seriously but try not to take ourselves too seriously.
