I joined Prof Ariando’s group while pursuing my master’s degree. My main research area was magnetic property control using multiferroic materials. In the process of learning various aspects of physics, I became very interested in nanomaterials and technology and was looking for work in such related fields.
But job opportunities have decreased a lot more compared to previous years so it was hard to find employment with more people competing for the same position. I decided to look for a place that will be more suitable for my own development. I am now employed as an optical engineer in a Suzhou-based startup company dedicated to the development and testing of optical and terahertz instruments. I am grateful to be playing a useful role in this company and receiving a good income. I think a good company is a place where people can realise their talents fully and so add to the value of their life.
I find that acquiring a physics training has enhanced my learning ability. I would like to encourage our graduates to never be afraid to venture into a field that is not related to your field of study. You can make up for your shortcomings through follow-up study with a good learning ability. The strategy to finding a job is simply to be open-minded and look for a position you like, send in your resume, and then work hard for it.
My motivation for a better life has always led me further and I believe NUS is the place that has given me a lot of opportunities to acquire new knowledge. I am thankful for the growth I have experienced and the many friends I have made over the two years I spent in NUS.
