Master of Science by Coursework in Physics

(for cohorts AY2022/23 and after)

  • Advanced training in both experimental and theoretical Physics, with all graduate courses offered at the Department of Physics and the Centre of Quantum Technologies (CQT) being elective courses for MSc Physics students.
  • Graduates of this programme have various career options. They can join institutes, universities or government agencies as research associates, educators, or take jobs like staff scientists, R&D managers, project managers, etc. in the private sector.
  • Graduates from this programme are encouraged to apply for PhD programmes in NUS and/or other world-class universities.
  • Opportunities for Physics teachers and other professionals to further upgrade their professional skills and qualifications.

Track 1 – 40 units

  • Read and pass 40 units – PC5XXX or QT5XXX courses (excluding PC5198)
  • Up to two courses (8 units) can be level 4000 PC courses
  • Up to two courses (8 units) can be level 5000 courses offered by other departments, subject to approval.
  • Students may choose to complete a research project in lieu of courses – PC5286 equivalent to 8 units

Track 2 – 80 units

  • Read and pass 80 units – PC5XXX or QT5XXX courses (excluding PC5198)
  • Up to two courses (8 units) can be level 5000 courses offered by other departments, subject to approval.
  • Up to nine courses (36 units) can be level 4000 PC courses
  • Up to two courses (8 units) can be level 3000 PC courses
  • Students may choose to complete a research project in lieu of courses – PC5286 equivalent to 8 units

One intake per academic year in August.

  • Students have to register courses on the CourseReg@EduRecsystem by following the course registration procedure and schedule in the Faculty of Science.
  • Students will bear the consequences of their decisions in adding/dropping courses, which may result in a delay in their graduation if not planned properly.
  • Not all courses are offered in the same semester or in the same format every year. Courses offered can be found in the “Current Students > Timetable” tab.
  • A full-time student may read up to six courses per regular semester, whereas a part-time student may read up to three courses per regular semester.
  • Students are responsible in ensuring that they do not register for courses with any timetable clashes, and are able to attend classes and sit for examinations as scheduled. Course timetable are found here.
